Trauma and the Brain:
When we have experienced trauma, our brain holds onto the memories as if they have just happened, and the experiences don't get properly passed up to long term memory.
Because of this, anything in our environment that looks, sounds, or smells anything like the traumatic event, even just a little bit, will trigger our brain right back into that same place, and often we will feel like the event has just happened.
Every time this happens, it will reinforce the danger to our brain, which will continue to look out for further dangers.
Over time, this can cause our brain to label more and more things as being a threat, causing us to withdraw, avoiding and distrusting
Our brain continues to try to resolve the memory during our dreams, leading to nightmares and poor sleep.
It's very normal to go through cycles of anger, grief, self-blame and shame.
It can become harder to make decisions.
Trauma and the Body:
With the brain holding on to the trauma as if it had just happened, the body is continuously flooded with stress hormones, keeping it on high alert.
This leads to stress and tension in the body, with frequent aches, pains and headaches
Poor sleep leads to exhaustion
Poor concentration and memory is very common
Continuous activation of the fight or flight system leads to a feeling of physical unrest, agitation, anxiety and panic attacks, as well as anger and often a deep need to get away, to escape.
Often, feelings of being dissociated from the body are experienced as survival mechanisms are activated.
This ongoing stress will lead to a state of physical and mental overwhelm.
The body may struggle to heal from injuries and illnesses.
Very often we will find ways to numb the pain through self medicating with alcohol and different drugs.
The Process:
Everyones journey in healing from trauma is slightly different and this is tailored to your needs, but lets look at the basics.
We start with a call, even just a few minutes just to have spoken to each other, for me to get an understanding of the situation and for us to discuss how many sessions will be required.
When you're happy with things, we'll arrange to move forward, either by arranging a video call or booking you in for your first appointment.
Our first meeting together will be mostly around us getting used to each other, whether that's through learning about each or just a casual chat.
From there we'll start to learn together about trauma and how it impacts the brain and body. This helps us to both learn together about your current situation and how we're going to guide you to healing from the past.
Traumatic Memories: We won't talk about them, unless you want to, but we'll identify the specific memory or memories that need to be dealt with.
In acute trauma (specific single events) we will be dealing with that specific memory and anything subsequent that's happened since.
In complex trauma's (multiple incidents or an ongoing series of traumatic events) we will work out which are the memories that we would need to tackle first. Often working on these memories will allow the brain to begin to then process other memories as well.
Various hypnotic techniques and eye movement therapy will help your brain to reprocess the memories in a way that will finally allow them to move into long term memory. While you won't forget, your brain will know that it's not happening now. You'll have control over the memories.
We will work on the learnings and limiting beliefs that you have taken on. We will help you to start to challenge and reprogram these old learnings with new ways of looking at life.
Tried and tested methods from mindfulness will help to deeply relax your body and reset your nervous system. This process will allow your body to start to feel safe in the present moment again. Because the brain and body are one system, the feedback from the body relaxing and letting go of tension is really helpful in this process.
Solution-Focused Therapy techniques and coaching will help you to set new goals so that as you are healing from the past, you will also be creating a future that you deserve.
